Dear Enough Is Enough Campaign Supporter:
On April 10, 2008, the Enough Is Enough Campaign, in conjunction with the Parents Television Council, released a joint study analyzing the music video content on BET and MTV's top video programs. You can view the study at:
http://www.parentstv.org/PTC/publications/reports/RapStudy/STUDYBET-MTV080410.pdf. The study shows that 40% of the viewing audience during the music video programs is under the age of 18, and that during one study period an instance of adult content (i.e. sexually explicit references, profanity, violence, drug references, and other illegal activity) aired once every 38 seconds.
You should read the study for yourself, but the study quantifies what we have all felt intuitively, and that is, that the minds of today's youth are being polluted by media and entertainment companies that promote messages that demean women, glorify violence and criminal activity, and portray young men as gangsters and thugs. I think you would agree with me that this has got to stop.
The Next Step: "Advertiser Accountability"
After being in existence for 8 months now, our campaign is transitioning to the "Advertiser Accountability" phase of our efforts. What is also disturbing, according to the study, is that major American corporations are sponsoring this programming by running commercials during these music video programs. These corporations are also implicated in this issue because it is their corporate advertising dollars that make this programming possible. It is time now to let our voices be heard.
You Can Make a Difference
Below is a list of companies that I would like to ask you to call, email, and/or write to express your concern that their commercials are airing on music video programs like "106 & Park" and "Rap City" on Black Entertainment Television, and "SuckerFree Countdown" on MTV.These are programs that are filled with messages that encourage violence, drug use/dealing, other criminal activities, and contain profanity and sexually explicit themes. I want to ask you to contact these corporations once a week, to let them know that you are deeply disturbed and offended that they would sponsor such programming. Let them know that their company is named as a leading advertising of these programs. In your own way, let them know that you would like them to immediately stop running commercials during these programs until these networks agree not to air music videos that contain these themes. Let them know that while you have enjoyed their products, if they refuse to make such changes in their advertising practices, you will be forced to purchase different products. You should provide your name, email address, and your telephone number if you desire, when placing your calls or sending emails/letters to these corporations. We need as many people as possible to express their concerns as well, so I would like to ask you to get your family members, children, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to do the same. As a matter of fact, you can email this Action Alert to those in your address book. Let's start a long-term movement that can make a difference in today's popular culture. Below is a list of the company names, addresses, phone numbers, and/or in some instances, a company link for you to express your comment online.
Again, please contact these companies once every week if you can. And make sure you get others to do likewise. You can email us at: enoughisenoughcampaign@hotmail.com to share any feedback that you receive from these corporations. Thank you.
