October 2, 2008 BETcancels "Rap"
We have learned this week that BET will be canceling the rap music video show Rap. Citing concerns about loss of sponsorships and declining ratings, the network will air the last episode of Rapin late October after 21 years of being on the air. This program change comes on the heels of the resignation or firing three weeks ago of Reginald Hudlin, BET President of Entertainment. Our monitors have also noticed that the morning airing of 106 & Park has been eliminated from the daily morning programming line up (it still airs in the afternoon).
We believe these changes are due in large part to the pressure put on Viacom by the Enough Is Enough Campaign for Corporate Responsibility in Entertainment. We would like to thank all of you who have supported this campaign in any way over the past 15 months. The rallies in New York and Washington, DC, the 'Rap on Rap Study' produced in April of this year, and the advertiser accountability efforts have served to expose the problem of adult-themed content being marketed to children and youth. We would also like to thank those conscientious advertisers that agreed over the past 5 months to remove their commercials from certain music video programs on BET and MTV. The Enough Is Enough Campaign is testament of power of your voice, and of the impact consumer activism can have on changing the kinds of images and messages our children receive.
The Enough Is Enough Campaign will continue engaging networks, advertisers, and cable providers about adult-themed programming that targets youth. The struggle continues.

....During his tenure, however, BET's viewership had declined significantly. Average household daily viewership, for instance, dropped from 353,000 in 2006 to 316,000 in 2007, according to the media research company SNL Kagan....The 29-year-old network also has long come under fire for its music videos. Detractors have charged that BET videos perpetuated racial stereotypes of African Americans and demeaned women. Before joining BET, Hudlin was a vocal critic of its programming; as programming chief, however, he vigorously defended the schedule -- even as he pledged to dramatically alter the lineup with original scripted shows.... What BET SAYS VS What BET DOES!
We believe Black Entertainment Television says one thing, but they do another.
The following is a sample of some of the messages currently being aired on video programs (mainly 106 & Park, BET NOW & Rap City) marketed to children and youth from 11 am - 7:30 pm Monday-Friday.
Here's what BET says.
In a letter to our campaign, Debra Lee, CEO of Black Entertainment Television said the following about the networks programming guidelines...:
BET does not air programming that endorses or condones illegal drugs or gratuitious violence;
we have a list of words that are fordbidden on our channel;
And we do not air music videos that contain graphic or excessive sexual activity or violence. We work with the music labels and artists to edit music videos where appropriate.
We have documented the following companies whose commercials air during BET's video programs. The advertising dollars of these companies are sponsoring programming that glorifies violence, criminal activity, drug use/drug dealing, the objectification of women, and portrayal of black and latino men as pimps, gangsters, and thugs.
